Scoring & Interpretation

The IELTS test uses a 9-band scoring system to report test scores in a consistent manner. You receive a score for each of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and an Overall Band Score.

Overall Band Score#

Scale & Calculation

Scores are reported in whole and half bands (e.g., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0). The Overall Band Score is calculated by taking the mean score of the four components (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).

  • 0: Did not attempt the test.
  • 9: Expert user.
  • calculated as the average of the 4 component scores.

Rounding Rules

.25Rounds UP to .56.25 → 6.5
.75Rounds UP to next whole6.75 → 7.0
.125Rounds DOWN6.125 → 6.0

Marking by Section#

L/RListening & Reading

Both the Listening and Reading components contain 40 questions. Each correct item awards one mark.

Interpretation & Validity#

Band Score Meanings

  • 9
    Expert User. Full operational command of the language. Appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding.
  • 7
    Good User. Operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations.
  • 6
    Competent User. Generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings.

Validity Period

The Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for two years. You may not be able to use your result after this period unless you provide evidence to the Receiving Organization that you have maintained or improved your English.
